Squirrels
The Squirrel people can be generally compared to a blend of fictitious fantasy society and members of Sciuridae biological family.
Squirrels are one of the fifty-five races of anthropomorphic mammals that populate Yanìs, and are grouped in the subgenus of Rodents together with Beavers, Mice, Porcupines and Rats.
Physically they are quite small, never exceeding 3 feet in height. Their showy, curled tail can reach almost the same length as the rest of their body. The coat color is highly variable, ranging from reddish-brown to blond-gray, while the lower part of their body is always white. Their strong legs allow them to move with great agility and dexterity, and their sharp nails and plantar pads enable them to climb with surprising skill.
The Squirrel people, although not that quarrelsome, have not always been so particularly wise throughout their history. Their refined war skills developed in the past mainly due to their neighbors, especially in clashes against the Lynx people, with whom they still harbor some resentment. Yet, after the end of the Rats War, the close friendship between Prince Ardeel and the noble Arlton, born along the Tale course, brought both peoples to put aside their grudges and unite under the same kingdom to guard the borders of the jail-desert Dav-Al-Munar.
The Squirrel people's energy and enthusiasm for life shine through every inch of their tiny bodies. Being alive is a wonderful thing for them, and they squeeze every ounce of enjoyment out of it. They are commonly willing to make mistakes and laugh at themselves in the process of perfecting what they do, taking bold (sometimes foolhardy) risks. They exhibit a natural adroitness that often surprises larger races, and this nimbleness regularly comes in handy when their courage outruns their common sense. Not surprisingly, tales about the Squirrel people abound with lucky breaks and narrow escapes.
Their cities and architecture are unique and fascinating: taking full advantage of the great Yorgussen redwood forest, they have built vertical cities composed of wooden houses and mansions that spiral up along the trunks of those huge trees. Most of the houses are built from the bark outwards, with only a few lodgings hollowed out inside the tree. Very few structures, mostly community buildings or homes of poor people and farmers/ranchers, are instead built on land.
Whether they are extroverted and playful, or fearless warriors without a smile, a feature is really typical of the Squirrels people: they speak so quickly that they almost seem to be able to take off their thoughts from the head hurry enough. Inexplicably, even if they share ideas and opinions on a wide range of different topics at the same time, they still manage to listen carefully to others. Not surprisingly, many of them are also skilled engineers, scholars and playwrights.
They speak the Commal language, common to all Anthro mammal races, and the most commonly spoken language on the planet.
Religiously they are mostly devoted to Jimbasi (deity of honor and courage), Rowana (deity of family and love), and Cilldyn (deity of exploration and streets), but here and there also thrive the cult of Dykren (deity of subterfuge and gamble), Kudan (deity of poison and torture), Najan (deity of agriculture and community), and Dekar (deity of pride and wealth).
Their Ancestral Princes were Gimble and Orla, who taught their race the importance of guarding one's possessions, especially those of great value or need. Much of their traditions are centered on the ability to hide and keep safe what is precious; on the importance of safeguarding collective warehouses, of keeping treasures hidden from view, but also of remembering where a valuable item has been hidden.
