Zebras

The Zebra people can be generally compared to a blend of Assyrian society and members of Hippotigris biological subgenus.
Zebras are one of the fifty-five races of anthropomorphic mammals that populate Yanìs, and are grouped in the subgenus of Ungulates together with Deers, Horses and Mouflons.

Physically they are of average height, never taller than 7.5 feet, but have a muscular body that can weigh up to 200kg. They have the characteristic black and white striped color, and no two specimens are completely alike. Their muzzle is black or dark in color, and at birth, foals are covered with white and brown stripes. Each of their feet has a single wide hoof, while their hands have five digits that are visibly similar to large nails.

The society of the Zebras is based on a warrior aristocracy that owns most of the land, while the rest of the population is divided between peasants and artisans who lead miserable lives. Despite these social differences, they are skilled merchants and barterers, and their rich and plentiful markets, called karum, are renowned all over the Sarema continent. In their society, mares do not have the same rights as stallions and, like slaves, do not have real rights other than heading new wives in the harem. The only real right afforded to mares is to decree when a foal must leave his father's house to start his own family.
Most of their cities are made up of many small, thick-walled houses and huge palaces. In fact, since their materials are mostly sun-dried or kiln-fired bricks, their weakness leads to an exaggeration of the thickness of walls. The house's area is usually divided into numerous halls and courtyards covered by domes of all shapes, often surrounded by cedar-wood colonnades, covered with copper lamellae and supporting cedar-wood ceilings. Even the large palaces have two different environments: official environments that overlook the access courtyards, and private environments overlooking internal courtyards. In addition to monumental architecture, the Zebras have also developed a thriving artistic culture, famous above all for its reliefs and bas-reliefs, mural painting, and ivory processing. They are also usually credited with the invention of beer and grain fermentation.

For the Zebras, a city is not a unique and private possession; instead, it is a place of common property for the whole people. They live in a nomadic way, following a migratory cycle linked to climatic conditions and moving from one city to another, thus leaving behind ghost-towns in periods of extreme climate. When they arrive in a house, they make it their own with everything, and then empty it completely when they leave, thus allowing others to live there. Furthermore, there is always at least one city entirely dedicated to young adult bachelors who have been removed from their father's house.

They speak the Commal language, common to all Anthro mammal races, and the most commonly spoken language on the planet.

Religiously they are mostly devoted to Najan (deity of agriculture and community), Azlean (deity of gardens and medicine), and Ekoari (deity of commerce and crafting), but here and there also thrive the cult of Cilldyn (deity of stars and streets), Mizame (deity of drunkenness and lust), Zundoey (deity of undeath and oblivion), and Dykren (deity of gamble and challenges).

Their Ancestral Princes were Gilgamesh and Ninhursag, who taught their race the prominence of the harem, which is within the family and ruled by the herd. The social life of the Zebras must always be managed by concentric circles: from the stallion who takes care of his harem and who heads to the family-chief who guides all the harems of his foals and relatives, up to the Herd-King, who governs and guides all the families of their people.

Footnote
Typical of the Zebra people is the use of the weapon called trishpol, an odd weapon also known as a bladed scarf. Knowing that seductive shows can bring out the worst in a bystander, Zebras sew rows of razor-sharp blades into their veils.
