Pikes
The Pike people can be generally compared to a blend of Dacian and Danubian society and members of Esociformes biological order.
Pikes are one of the ten races of anthropomorphic fishes that populate Yanìs, and are grouped in the subgenus of Gilleds together with Carps, Catfishes and Piranhas.
Physically, they have medium-short stature, with a height of no more than 5 feet, and a stout and muscular body. They have a rather large head compared to the body, which is elongated and flattened, and a not-so-long tail (or caudal fin). Their scales have a yellowish-white color on the belly and a green/dark-brown spotted back. Like a few other Anthros, they have kept reproduction by oviparity, and females lay a pair of eggs in a grass basin after fertilization occurs through sexual acts. Also, like others belonging to the Gilleds subgenus, they have developed legs and a double breathing system, thanks to a sort of primitive lung similar to an animal-lungfish. They can live out of the water for some time, even up to ten days, but they have a constant need to fully bathe the body at least once a day.
The Pikes' society is more oriented towards war than peace and, not by chance, Pikes are seen as one of the most aggressive and warlike among Ersinya peoples. In fact, in Pike people prehistory, there was only one leader of wisdom who brought them to stability and thriving. After clashing, first with Foxes and then with Wolves, the Pike people's well-being wasn’t high, but this leader managed to create a stable and autonomous kingdom under his guidance as king. On the death of that great ruler the kingdom dissolved, and numerous clashes ensued. This led them to agree, with discreet acceptance, to the annexation under the Druid-King in hope of re-establishing a lasting social order.
The Pike people were, and still are despite Ersinya's government, divided into two classes: the aristocracy, who are entrusted with administration, economy, and elite warriors; and the commoners, who include lowlevel soldiers, peasants, and artisans. The main occupations of Pikes' daily life, besides clashes, are fishing and fish farming, bug breeding, pottery production, and some metallurgy since they also own some gold and silver extracted from their rich mines.
The Pike people are famous for murus, a defensive wall and fortification building technique that characterizes their cities, both small and large, along with strongholds and astronomical observation platforms. A typical feature of their cities, built in concentric circles around a river ford, is the very high buildings and the water pumping systems that allow the creation of various waterfalls along the same buildings' facade. The central square of each city, the city market, and some community buildings are often, if not always, semi-submerged or completely submerged into river water.
They speak the Itthen language, common to all Anthro fish races, a guttural language accompanied by strong facial expressions, understandable even underwater where sounds are less easy to hear (perhaps a Japanese gibberish).
Religiously they were mostly devoted to Kalaukeke (deity of battle and storms), Teeje (deity of piracy and looting), and Najan (deity of hunt and community), but after the union to the great Druid-King the cult of the deities was almost completely abandoned in favor of the Druidic traditions, almost but not totally.
Their ancestral princes were Dooras and Kutrygua, who taught their race that Pikes are aggressive by nature, the most dangerous predators of any river, and this must always be in their enemy’s and allies' minds. Furthermore, every Pike must always remember that their nature changes according to their river: living in a strong river will grow strong Pikes.
Footnote
Typical of the Pike people is the use of a boat called shlep, a river transport built in the shapes of a fish, with a rather low and wide keel and whose stern is steer sideways to maneuver, just like a fish's tail.
