Sailfishes

The Sailfish people can be generally compared to a blend of Tongan and Lapita society and members of the Istiophoridae biological family.
Sailfishes are one of the ten races of anthropomorphic fishes that populate Yanìs, and are grouped in the subgenus of Thalassials together with Manta rays and Sharks.

Physically, they are quite large in build, with a body length that can reach 7 feet, and a light weight of no more than 70 kg. They have two dorsal fins: the first is long and very low for almost the entire length, but in the most anterior part, it suddenly rises in a pointed lobe. The second is small and opposite to the second anal fin. The caudal fin is large, powerful, and lunate, with two keels on the caudal peduncle. They can rapidly change color, an effect created by pigment containing iridophores and light-reflecting skin cells. Most often, however, the body is blue-black on top with a silvery white underside. Their skin can be temporarily covered with mucus used in skin breathing, and that means they can live out of water for three or four days, but they have a constant need to fully bathe their bodies in saltwater at least once a day. Their fry are born ovoviviparouss, meaning they hatch within the mother's body, and families usually can have even more than ten or twelve fry throughout their life.

The Sailfish people were, for a short time, a powerful kingdom with imperialist leanings, and the first legendary ruling dynasty, the Ku'i Koga, was founded by tribes from Northern Aelinar Ocean. The decline of Ku'i Koga began due to numerous wars and internal pressures, in response to which political advisers, known as falefâ, were established, which initially managed to keep the dynasties in office but then pressure led anyway to the assassination of many leaders. In addition to this, the treaty of alliance with the Shark people should also be highlighted which led to the war against Im'faal and Anonca and ended in loss for the peoples of Yalathon.

In their culture they tend to never build anything truly lasting or important, and therefore the great underwater cities of their past are now only ruins. For most of their lives, they live in constant movement into ocean waters, visiting settlements and inhabited centers only rarely. Few are the ones who stop to live in one place, and ancient imperial ideas have now been forgotten in favor of a nomadic and more piratical-profitable life. They have great skill to raise wide tuna and squid shoals just as if they were livestock. In fact, they use to "graze" shoals of fish just like poultry and herds are raised on the mainland. Their art, and especially music, are renowned by underwater races but are not appreciated at all by terrestrial ones.

They speak the Itthen language, common to all Anthro fish races, a guttural language accompanied by strong facial expressions, understandable even underwater where sounds are less easy to hear (perhaps a Japanese gibberish).

Religiously they are almost exclusively devoted to Teeje (deity of navigation, piracy and looting), but other cults are also present, such as Madra (deity of discord and corruption), Najan (deity of hunt and community), and Ekoari (deity of commerce and crafting).

Their Ancestral Princes were Makaire and Kajikia, who taught their race the intangibility of life as chaos and death. Since everyone is someone else's prey or predator, life cannot achieve any other goal than entropy. What is built gives way to the passage of time, as does life itself, and the ocean is the main teacher of this certainty. Everything flows in an endless stream towards destruction: knowledge is lost, ties are broken, meats perish, and everything becomes entropy.

Footnote
Typical of Sailfish people is the use of a vessel called Ch’urch’eli, a very large and heavy boat, equipped with large accommodation for captains and a particularly large cargo hold, equipped with many large sails placed laterally and under the keel to exploit ocean currents instead of wind.
