Sharks

The Shark people can be generally compared to a blend of fictitious fantasy society and members of the Lamniformes biological order.
Sharks are one of the ten races of anthropomorphic fishes that populate Yanìs, and are grouped in the subgenus of Thalassials together with Manta rays and Sailfishes.

Physically, they're quite large and imposing, although there are many differences in size. Their average body length ranges from 6 to 8 feet and they weigh no less than a hundredweight. Typical physical features include a tapered body, pointed head, and large jaws. Most of them have five gill slits on the sides of their head. In addition to the first dorsal fin, which is pointed and triangular, they have a pair of pectoral fins, a pair of pelvic fins, and a second dorsal fin. The lower part of their body is white, while the upper part has shades ranging from gray to blue, sometimes slate. Although most of them have a clear resemblance to the great white shark, there are some that have similar features to other physiologies, such as the hammerhead, tiger, goblin, mako, and even whale shark, basking shark, and spiny dogfish. Their skin can be temporarily covered with a mucus used in skin breathing, which means they can live out of water for three or four days, but they have a constant need to fully bathe their body in saltwater at least once a day. Their fries are born ovoviviparous, meaning they hatch within the mother's body, and families usually can have even ten or twelve fries throughout their life.

Shark people are probably considered the most feared people on the planet, both for their warlike nature that has always pushed them to war, raids, and assaults, and for their nomadic nature that has led them to spread over all seas. Due to the absence of a unitary government and a shortage of cities and settlements, they're also considered by many to be an emblem of anarchy, however, this is only partially true: they are mainly nomadic, but there are not rare cases in which a whole crew (clan) chooses to live stably, mostly by breeding large fish shoals and building housing centers.

They have a largely warlike and predatory culture, and their freebooter lifestyle certainly doesn't give them a good reputation. However, there are crews that do not engage in piracy and are renowned for their good artistic culture and love for history and archeology. Although they do not have a central government, the various crews, responding to their captains, all belong to different brotherhoods (more or less wide groups of crews) whose commanders (captains of several crews) rule the political and social life according to one of the oldest codes ever written, even if it is often considered just a trace.

They speak the Itthen language, common to all Anthro fish races, a guttural language accompanied by strong facial expressions, understandable even underwater where sounds are less easy to hear (perhaps a Japanese gibberish).

Religiously they are almost exclusively devoted to Teeje (deity of navigation, piracy and looting), but other cults are also present, such as Najan (deity of hunt and community), Mizame (deity of lust and anarchy), and Ekoari (deity of commerce and crafting).

Their Ancestral Princes were Mürgérran and Karjiãriãs, who taught their race that life is about hunger and battle in the great underwater world. Everything is in motion, in constant and ever-changing movement that takes everything with it. In a Shark's life, everything happens in a clash, since the most sublime harmony is born from it. In the universe, even in the smallest of its parts, there's a relentless struggle between conflicting forces. These forces will always be enemies, and it's to them, and to no one else, that each Shark owes its existence.

Footnote

Typical of Shark people is the use of vessels called Tongkang, a type of boat that is undoubtedly the largest ever built on planet, able of comfortably accommodating hundreds of sailors, and which some consider a real village in motion, equipped with side and below sails to exploit ocean currents, and a sort of "artificial lung" that functions as a swim bladder.
