Natrixes
The Natrix people can be generally compared to a blend of Nuragic societies and members of the Colubridae biological family.
Natrixes are one of the twelve races of anthropomorphic reptiles that populate Yanìs, and are grouped in the subgenus of Ophidians together with Anacondas, Cobras and Rattlesnakes.
Physically, they are quite small, with a length that rarely exceeds 4.5 feet, although their stature when crawling on the ground rarely exceeds 3 feet. Despite being predatory carnivores by nature, Natrixes are considered the least aggressive among the Ophidian races. Their skin is covered with scales arranged to form a complex pattern of colors; the front region blends green, gray, yellow, and black, the flanks are lighter, yellowish, with several dark spots from the neck to the tail, and the ventral region is covered by large scales that can vary from white to brown, generally with brown spots scattered irregularly. Like a few other Anthros, they reproduce by oviparity, and females lay a pair of eggs in a grassy basin after fertilization occurs through sexual acts.
Natrixes' most distinctive elements in their architecture and art are the nurhag, typically massive stone constructions with a truncated cone shape that tower over 60 feet tall, serving as common dwellings for different families. Most of the activities, both personal and communal, of Natrixes life take place within the nurhag, which are at the center of their life and assume almost more importance than their own life. The education and care of snakelets becomes a community activity within the nurhag, taking second place to direct family relationships. The only activities that lead Natrixians outside the nurhag are hunting and fishing, mining and rare trades, and of course wars.
Natrixes' society is organized into cantons, made up of various clans that follow a leader who controls a specific territory and lives within the same nurhag. Their political and social organization is ruled by a unique form of monarchy, a mix of hereditary and elective rule: rulers are generally chosen from the deceased King's family according to their own rules of succession, but this choice must then be formally ratified by a people's poll. In their culture, the people express their sovereignty in a participatory form, and the ruler, in carrying out his task, is assisted by a complex bureaucratic organization. Unfortunately, they will lost almost all of their original culture after being conquered by the Boar people (less than ten years after the Tale). Natrixes are somewhat shy and one can rarely encounter them in public. While not being great magic-users, they are often revered for their highly skilled Meta-Magic, especially Scribes and Alchemists.
They speak Erpeton language, common to all Anthro reptile races, a harsh, hissing language, spoken mostly in the southern hemisphere of the planet (perhaps an Arabic gibberish).
Religiously they are mostly devoted to Azlean (deity of peace and medicine), Vael Nhor (deity of magic and knowledge), and Najan (deity of agriculture and hunt), but here and there also thrive the cults of Rowana (deity of love and family), Sia Mori (deity of arts and dreams), Zundoey (deity of curses and oblivion), and Dykren (deity of subterfuge and gamble).
Their Ancestral Princes were Mereetus and Ezazaar, who taught their race that tranquility and a peaceful standard of living are the most important thing. It’s always good to avoid wars, clashes and disputes, unless there's no other possible solution. The well-being of oneself and of one's people comes before anything else, whatever the price to pay for it.
