Bats
The Bat people can be generally compared to a blend of pre-colombian Muisca society and members of the Chiroptera biological order.
Bats are one of the fifty-five races of anthropomorphic mammals that populate Yanìs, and are grouped in the subgenus of Burrowers together with Hares, Moles and Raccoons.
Physically, they are quite small and light, though with a very strong build. They reach a height of about 3.5 feet and weigh only about 30 kg. Their wings are developed by a modification of the upper limb: a vascularized skin membrane, the patagium, extends to the hips and lower limbs. The body is covered with thick fur, which is blackish in color, with different tones of red and yellow on collar. The head can take a variety of shapes, mainly associated with eating habits, and can be short and wide, or narrow and elongated. Their ears are large, sometimes exceptionally huge, and serve the function of collecting reflected sound waves emitted by themself for echolocation.
The Bat people were once divided into several large tribes' confederations, which had common political relations and affinities, but there were also some rivalries here and there. However, since their conquest by the Anaconda people, although they maintain the same organization, their confederations have no more value outside their culture. Their leaders are now considered curacas of the Empress, and their army, formed by so-called güeches, responds entirely to her. When the Anacondas conquered their territory, they found a rich people that tickled their ambitions: they, indeed, mined to obtain precious products such as emeralds, copper, coal, salt, and gold. The abundance of salt, emeralds, and coal has long made these minerals a de facto currency, and gold, in particular, is mined by the Bats in such quantities that it became one of their favorite materials for crafting.
Their architecture was born in prehistory due to the construction of some thatched huts, one close to the other, inside huge mountain caves. It then developed thanks to their mining and metallurgical skills, turning into the splendid cities they have today, with clay brick houses scattered inside tunnels. The Bats have also developed a complete irrigation system to cope with the agricultural problem caused, in the first place, by their mainly nocturnal life and, secondly, by their dwellings deep in the mountains. All of their precious artifacts and a tradition of gold offerings to deities helped create the legend of a secret city hidden in the depths of Urbrerakuz, whose walls would be entirely covered in gold.
They speak the Commal language, common to all Anthro mammal races, and the most commonly spoken language on the planet.
Religiously they were mostly devoted to Najan (deity of agriculture and hunt), Kudan (deity of diseases and torture), and Lotru Kori (deity of nightmares and madness), but since their annexation to the hissing empire also thrive the cults of Thialon (deity of tyranny and conquest) and Madra (deity of deceit and discord).
Although they've almost completely leave ancient Lohudonist traditions, Shamans and Witches remain in their culture, still today called Vampires due to their initiation, and daily diet, based on blood.
Their ancestral princes were Saqamanchica and Nemequene, who taught their race that darkness is their kingdom and that night shadows endorse their nature. Thus, nobody, nor ever, should fear a lack of light because it is the light that creates "monsters" and mind illusions. In the dark, on the contrary, everything is the same and formless. There can't be "monsters" in darkness. Moreover, the nature of the world is nothing but a reflection because nothing exists in and of itself, but is reflected in the world and in our minds.
