Foxes
The Fox people can be generally compared to a blend of Alemanni Germanic society and members of Vulpes biological genus.
Foxes are one of the fifty-five races of anthropomorphic mammals that populate Yanìs, and are grouped in the subgenus of Canids together with Jackals, Molossians, Wild dogs and Wolves.
Physically, they are particularly short and slender, with an average height of 4 feet and a weight of around 20-25 kilograms. Their color, often reddish, can vary from yellow to brown, while the throat, belly, and the tip of the long and bushy tail are white. Sometimes, but not always, some individuals undergo a winter molt, changing their fur color to complete white. They have an elongated and triangular snout, with extremely mobile ears.
The Foxes were a confederation of tribes settled in a fairly large territory on the mountains' slopes, until they were conquered by the Wolves and incorporated into the Askanar kingdom. Initially considered as "still orthodox allies", the Foxes gradually fully converted to the Deities cults, which, although they already worshiped, had always been a less central cult for them. Throughout the first twenty years of their annexation to Askanar, Wolves' sovereignty was mostly nominal, but after an uprising sparked by plausible but unproven accusations of treason, the alpha executed the Foxes' nobility and established Wolves' rulers instead of the previous ones. Even before their conquest and conversion, the Foxes had long ago adopted some laws of an unusual perspective. These laws were later adopted by the Wolves and, over time, exported to almost all continents.
Although they did not consider the Deities as their main cult, the Foxes were the first to introduce the concept of religious asylum: no fugitive seeking refuge in a temple or in any religious office should ever be forcibly removed or killed inside a sacred place. Most of their cities have a rather simple architecture, mostly composed of houses built with wood and mortar, and thatched roofs, loosely arranged concentrically starting from a market square. They are not accustomed to building palisades or city walls, and to protect themselves from any attacks or sieges, they instead dig long underground tunnels with secret exits and escape routes. In times of peace, these tunnels are often used as warehouses to store food supplies.
The Foxes are skilled breeders, especially of small animals and poultry, good fishermen and hunters, discreet farmers, blacksmiths, and miners, and have good artistic skills. One of their features is certainly Mesmerist magic, in which they excel, and one of the most important magic academies of northern Varooy is due to them, as well as the birth of the Knaves guild.
They speak the Commal language, common to all Anthro mammal races, and the most commonly spoken language on the planet.
Religiously they were mostly devoted to Lohudonist and Druidic traditions, with few deity cults. After the conquest, however, these traditions ended up being almost replaced by the cult of Dykren (deity of gamble and challenges), Mizame (deity of drunkenness and anarchy), Vael Nhor (deity of magic and memory), and Zundoey (deity of undeath and oblivion).
Their ancestral principles were Ælfstan and Eydís, who taught their race that their adaptability and the use of cunning and ingenuity to get by are their main strengths. When it is necessary to fight, it is right to do so, but if it can be avoided to face unnecessary dangers, then it is better to look for different solutions. Furthermore, one's family and the community in which one lives are important, and for this reason, it is also important to communicate and not hide one's thoughts from loved ones.
