Wolves
The Wolf people can be generally compared to a blend of Vikings or Norsemen society and members of Canis lupus biological species.
Wolves are one of the fifty-five races of anthropomorphic mammals that populate Yanìs, and are grouped in the subgenus of Canids together with Foxes, Jackals, Molossians and Wild dogs.
Physically, they are considered the largest of all canids, with a tall and powerful physique that can easily exceed 5 feet in height and 70 kilograms in weight. They have slightly longer legs than other canids, which allows them to move more quickly and with greater agility, especially on snow. Females tend to be smaller and less strong. Their fur color varies from almost pure white to various shades of blond, cream, gray, brown, and black, sometimes also spotted.
The Wolf people have always been warlike, dedicated to clash and combat; undoubtedly capable of great family tenderness and care, but still always devoted to physical challenge. For example, it is their strong belief that anyone who dies in battle, weapons in hand, will receive a favorable judgment in the afterlife. Kalaukeke, the deity of battles, it' said that will put in a good word for them with Caamiran, the divine judge.
Savage and brave fighters, the Wolf people are feared on the battlefield both on land and at sea. From the very beginning of their history, they indeed raided, pirated, traded, and docked throughout almost all of the Varooy continent. Expert sailors and seafarers aboard their characteristic long ships, the drakkar, the Wolves established settlements and plundered from the Arctic islands to all along the Varooy coasts until Sarema coasts, and even along trade routes to Sungam. Despite their warlike traditions, however, most Wolves have always also been herdsmen, fishermen, artisans, traders, and even farmers sometimes, able to boast a good quality of agricultural and artisan techniques.
The Askanar kingdom has always been ruled in a pyramid manner. Every citizen without political, juridical, or military power is defined as an omega, while a beta is who is ruling the city and is elected by the city's aristocracy, the so-called deltas. At the head of the whole kingdom, which brings together all of the cities' assets, there's the alpha, the undisputed leader and ruler of the whole people. Upon the death of an alpha, all deltas of all cities gather and vote on which of the current betas should become the new alpha. This system will be maintained even after the conquests of neighboring races, and it will not be difficult in the future to see also Badgers, Foxes or Skunks to be the alpha of the whole kingdom.
Although they are not devoted to a literary heritage, they have developed a cultural system based on runestones and an impressive choral singing art born from their custom of howling together at the full moon, a practice generally used also as a conclusion to any kind of ritual.
They speak the Commal language, common to all Anthro mammal races, and the most commonly spoken language on the planet.
Religiously they are mostly devoted to Teeje (deity of piracy and looting), Kalaukeke (deity of battle and storms), and Najan (deity of hunt and community), but here and there also thrive the cult of Thialon (deity of tyranny and ambition), Rowana (deity of family and love), Zundoey (deity of curses and oblivion), and Jimbasi (deity of honor and nobility).
Their ancestral princes were Bjørn and Ulfhild, who taught their race that devotion and loyalty to the family and one's superiors is the foundation of a right and well-regulated society. Ulfhild, more than anything else, teaches them that no family member should be left alone, and therefore, being punished with exile is the worst penalty one can suffer.
Footnote
Typical of the Wolf people is the use of pittock, a small weapon pickaxe entirely made of forged steel, without a real hilt, and handle wrapped in thick leather, very efficient both as a throwing weapon and for mounts and glaciers climbing.
