Cheetahs
The Cheetah people can be generally compared to a blend of Masai society and members of the Acinonyx biological genus.
Cheetahs are one of the fifty-five races of anthropomorphic mammals that populate Yanìs, and are grouped in the subgenus of Felines together with Hyenas, Leopards, Lions, Lynxes and Tigers.
Physically, they are, on average, small and light with a height that rarely exceeds 5 or 5.5 feet and a weight that never exceeds 60kg. Their legs are long and thin, allowing for a wide stride, and they are highly famous for their running speed, which is almost unmatched. Their coat is short and shaggy, except for the upper neck, where it is slightly longer and softer, with a basic color ranging from fawn to whitish-gray that lightens up to white on the chest and muzzle. On the whole body, there is a uniform spotting: the spots are circular and black, without rosettes, and along the sides, there are numerous spots of smaller diameter.
The peaceful Cheetah people have had, in spite of themselves, a rather ruinous and bloody history. Unfortunately, their territory is located on the border between two great enemy powers: Elephants and Rhinos. This geographical situation has forced them to endure several wars between the two kingdoms, which have often broken up the Cheetah people birthplace, annexing them, from time to time, to one or the other kingdom. However, at the very beginning of the Tale, many Rhino soldiers, honestly taken to pity for the Cheetah people, began to protest in order to stop the wars and reach a common agreement for their neighbors' welfare. The agreement will be reached, after countless diplomatic meetings, only a few years after the end of the Tale, and will decree the definitive annexation of Cheetahs to Ikora, but with the exceptional prerogative of being an independent protectorate, rather than a vassal territory.
Traditionally, the Cheetah people are transhumant hunters and breeders, only sometimes sedentary, and it's no coincidence that their culture revolves around livestock care. Their settlements mostly consist of log cabins supported by thick poles and covered with straw, often with deep wells and livestock fences. They have a patriarchal structure, and the elders have almost absolute decision-making power. A council of elders is also called upon to decide when to start a new initiation squad, a rite that gives birth to a new generation of adults. Despite not having a flourishing literate culture, the traditional Cheetah people music is widely renowned. It is made up of rhythms provided by a chorus while an olaranyani, the song leader, sings the melody accompanied by the widely used drone polyphony.
They speak the Commal language, common to all Anthro mammal races, and the most commonly spoken language on the planet.
Religiously they are mostly devoted to Rowana (deity of love and family), Najan (deity of hunt and community), and Jimbasi (deity of courage and honor), but here and there also thrive the cult of Madra (deity of corruption and deceit) and Cilldyn (deity of stars and exploration), but also some Druidic and Lohudonist cults that keep tarrying.
Their ancestral princes were Enkai and Narok, who taught their race the value of speed and power, as much as the value of stillness, quiet, and lasting peace. The great record in running speed is a gift to be proud of, not an exotic power to be exploited on every occasion, and this teaches every Cheetah the value of measuring their energies, words, feelings, and worth. Likewise, Narok adds that the lives of males and females must be separated as much as possible, always following the belief of power thrift because "where there’s no rivalry, then there’s not even the wastage of war".
Footnote
Typical of the Cheetah people is the use of a weapon called adamu, a long, slightly curved blade, sharpened outwards and with a short handle. Held along the forearms, it's used to hit opponents in running sprints.
