Giraffes
The Giraffe people can be generally compared to a blend of Khoikhoi or Hottentot society and members of Giraffidae biological family.
Giraffes are one of the fifty-five races of anthropomorphic mammals that populate Yanìs, and are grouped in the subgenus of Grazers together with Antelopes, Camels and Llamas.
Physically, they are among the tallest creatures on the planet, although they are neither huge nor mighty. Their height easily reaches 10 feet, but their weight rarely exceeds 1.5 tons. Despite their long necks and legs, which can even reach 3 feet, their bodies are relatively short. Their coats have dark spots that are rather rounded with some subtle projections on a tawny background color. As one goes down their legs, the spots become smaller and smaller. Additionally, especially in males, the coat darkens with age, and each individual has a unique coat design.
The Giraffe people have an innate nature of wealth and a trim society, although they have always been among the most down-to-earth peoples. Indeed, their northwestern position bordering Turao, favorable climate, and reliable rainfall near the ocean's coasts made the territory of Giraffe people attractive as early as prehistory. Although their appearance and attitude, generally aloof and a little snobbish, may make them appear like a semi-helpless, quiet, and benevolent people, the Giraffe people are, in truth, highly regarded and rarely underestimated. In the past, their farmers gradually cleared forests, and their slow but inexorable expansion gradually took over most of the sub-equatorial region. Their knowledge of agriculture and iron forging allowed them to clear lands and feed ever-larger numbers of settlements. Moreover, their blacksmiths early perfected iron smelting to forge mid-grade carbon steel, making them appear among the oldest peoples to develop this technique.
Over centuries, they evolved a form of government led by clan chiefs. This "kinship-organized" system was useful for coordinating work projects, settling internal disputes, and carrying out religious observances, but it could effectively rule only a limited number of people, due to the tuition of their Ancestral Princes. It's no coincidence that most of the Giraffe people were glad to leave the ruling responsibility to the Matriarch when it came time for the Yphoree kingdom.
Not particularly attracted to, nor devoted to, abstraction, the Giraffe people have developed more practical forms of art and crafts, such as weaving, engraving, engineering, and, not surprisingly, jewelry given that their land is dotted with silver and diamond deposits.
They speak the Commal language, common to all Anthro mammal races, and the most commonly spoken language on the planet.
Religiously they are mostly devoted to Azlean (deity of peace and gardens), Madra (deity of deceit and bribery), and Najan (deity of agriculture and community), but here and there also thrive the cult of Cilldyn (deity of stars and streets) and Dekar (deity of pride and wealth), but also some Druidic and Lohudonist cults that keep tarrying.
Their Ancestral Princes were Kikwete and Shamia, who taught their race the importance of individuality. The truth is that groups, kin, herds, or cities are only useful when needed to strengthen defenses and increase results. Those who are considered as having real responsibilities towards others are only responsible for the parental care of the youngest calves, while all others are the prerogative of the single individual. Whoever wants to bear any responsibility towards others, society, community growth, or any other kind does so as their personal choice and not for a higher quality of necessary social altruism.
