Armadillos

The Armadillo people can be generally compared to a blend of native Nazca society and members of the Cingulata biological order.
Armadillos are one of the fifty-five races of anthropomorphic mammals that populate Yanìs, and are grouped in the subgenus of Xenathras together with Anteaters and Sloths.

Physically, they are of rather short stature and have a slender yet very resilient body, with an average height of around 4 feet and a weight rarely exceeding 20 kg. Their body appears stocky and shaped like an inverted bean. It is covered by ossified scales, which are in turn covered by other epidermal scales, interconnected by flaps of skin that guarantee flexibility. This armor covers the back, sides, head, tail, and outer surface of legs, while the belly and inner part of legs have a very thick skin and a sparse bristly coat. Their coat is greyish with pinkish patches on bare skin areas, while hairs of the ventral region are gray-yellowish. The legs are short and stocky and have large nails suitable for excavation. The tail, very broad at the base, is conical in shape and covered with keratin rings. The head is elongated, and the ears are large and rhomboid in shape.

The Armadillo people have never been particularly unified and initially were a semi-nomadic people dedicated to gathering, divided into many chiefdoms. Originally from Sephyr, the Armadillo people were turned away in prehistoric times by Tortoise people. Then, crossing Kemar Strait, they came to settle in the south-westernmost part of Mogress, where they were welcomed by their new neighbors and cousins Sloths, and later Anteaters.
Their economy was based on intensive bug breeding and a scant agricultural capacity but, since their arrival in Mogress, they adopted a trading system that satisfied the population's needs and traded mountain products such as potatoes and wool in exchange for fruit, cotton, and ceramics. Of the three peoples that make up Waxari, Armadillo people are undoubtedly the most practical and warlike, less devoted to science and culture. Their cities are reminiscent of other semi-underground peoples, such as Hares or Moles, in fact, the Armadillo people build their homes below ground level, scattering vast areas of intricate and deep tunnels, often linked together. Community structures, temples, and commercial activities are instead built of clay brick and tiles.

Interesting in their culture is the religious custom of rebuilding temples, especially those dedicated to Caamiran. When, for some reason, it is believed that Caamiran is disgruntled, the temple's roofs and walls are destroyed and burned. Then, a new place of worship is built on the platform where the temple once stood. Music has always been an art that the Armadillo people have cultivated with great talent, as confirmed by the thousand different types of drums in their culture.

They speak the Commal language, common to all Anthro mammal races, and the most commonly spoken language on the planet.

Religiously they are mostly devoted to Cilldyn (deity of stars and exploration) and Caamiran (deity of cities and justice), but here and there also thrive the cult of Kalaukeke (deity of battles and competitions), Najan (deity of hunt and community), and Rowana (deity of love and hearth).

Their Ancestral Princes were Aéstéronn and Glyptoria, who taught their race the importance of respecting the terrain and soil that give them life and everything beautiful in it, for there can be nothing more beautiful than the solid ground under one's feet. The mighty Aéstéronn reminds them that the only important war in one's life is the war of defense, of resistance, and resilience, as no one in the world could ever be better than an Armadillo in surviving a siege unscathed.
