Badgers

The Badger people can be generally compared to a blend of Tolkien's Dwarf society and members of Melinae biological subfamily.
Badgers are one of the fifty-five races of anthropomorphic mammals that populate Yanìs, and are grouped in the subgenus of Mustelids together with Otters, Skunks and Weasels.

Physically, they are relatively short, only rarely reaching 5 feet in height. However, they compensate by being the largest of all mustelids and having a stocky and sturdy body. The badger's color is very characteristic and easily recognizable: the back is silvery-gray, the belly is brown, while the throat, neck, chest, and legs are black. The two bands that start from the upper lip, pass through the eyes, and reach the ears form their characteristic and unmistakable mask.

The Badger people have always been extremely touchy, featured by pride and susceptibility, and are often seen as grumblers who don't like anything. However, they've always been considered also a mighty people and an honest ally. Before their submission to the Wolves' kingdom, which will force the Badger people to long and grueling periods of siege within the mountains, they ruled themselves through a king for each city. One of these kings, in rotation, assumed the title of Great King and the responsibility of administering the general rules shared with all other cities. This multi-monarchical system is very similar to that used by Wolves, and that will led to an easy integration of Badgers into the new kingdom.

Despite being a race of anthropomorphic carnivores, they are often defined, jokingly but rightfully, as "the least carnivorous among carnivores." Their diet is, in fact, very variable and opportunistic, including both vegetables and animals. Throughout their history, they have developed excellent insect breeding and good cultivation skills, both underground and on the ground. Although they're also good at breeding larger animals, such as goats and cattle, not to mention their hunting skills, they're very infrequently used to these, being not particularly fond of having to go out on the surface. Instead, their best skills developed in rock carving, mineralogy, goldsmithing, and metalworking. Moreover, they possess a fine literary art, especially regarding adventure novels and operatic tragedy.
Most of their cities are made up of large settlements carved into the rock of high mountains, some of which vaguely assume the appearance of intricate tunnels, which can extend for many miles. Inside these "galleries", houses, buildings, and constructions of all kinds are obtained by digging the rock walls, then embellished with carvings, sculptures, and engravings of incredible refinement.

They speak the Commal language, common to all Anthro mammal races, and the most commonly spoken language on the planet.

Religiously they are mostly devoted to Ekoari (deity of crafting and science), Kalaukeke (deity of battle and competitions), Caamiran (deity of cities and law), and Mizame (deity of drunkenness and lust), but here and there several spiritualist cults keep tarrying and following the Lohudonist practices, while however not denying the Deities.

Their ancestral princes were Ruryk and Ushlah, who taught their race that males are owed governmental and military power, but females are responsible for every decision within the family. This leads them to a culture in which a husband is closely linked to marriage bond, monogamous and servile, while the female is entitled to all lovers and concubines she desires. It’s no coincidence that many males decide to marry only in old age, provided that their mothers do not arrange a marriage of convenience for them before then.
