Otters
The Otter people can be generally compared to a blend of Late Middle Ages Maritime Republics society and members of Lutrinae biological subfamily.
Otters are one of the fifty-five races of anthropomorphic mammals that populate Yanìs, and are grouped in the subgenus of Mustelids together with Badgers, Skunks and Weasels.
Physically they are short in stature, averaging just over 4.5 feet in height. They have dense, showerproof fur that protects them from cold and moisture, with a color that is deep brown on the upper part and lighter on the lower part. Their body is elongated, and their tails are long and tapered. They also have short arms with sharp claws and webbed paws. Their muzzle is stocky and covered with strong whiskers, with very small ears.
The Otter people had a rich and wealthy prehistory, quickly managing to establish themselves in maritime trading by traveling along the coasts of neighboring continents. However, it was not always a quiet and happy history, far from it. Their trading fleets had to equip themselves very fast with armaments and military crews to face various enmities, often fighting peoples of maritime and pirate mold.
They indeed suffered raids by Antelopes and Hyenas from Sarema, trade clashes with Eels and Sailfishes, and ended up suffering many losses. The so-called Wars of Pharaoh, which led to the end of the Antelopes piracy, offered Otters the opportunity to expand their trade, pouring on Sarema coasts, creating warehouses, colonies and trading establishments, and thus exerting some political influence at the local level. But then they had to suffer again, due to the war against the Shark people which, however, led them to the famous political treaties with the Catfish people and the birth of Maritime Republics.
Similar to their coastal neighbors, the Otter people also have a politics based on semi-independent cities of oligarchic nature. But unlike Catfishes they have a strong attachment to feelings of justice and political transparency.
Otter people love large, well-decorated spaces, and being an exclusively carnivorous and mercantile people, they have been able to avoid learning agriculture techniques, dedicating large spaces instead to gardens and public fountains. Most of their houses and cities are, in fact, built on several floors, constantly alternating between more and less artificial waterfalls, fountains, garden squares, and theaters. They obviously have a thriving fishing and fish farming business, but they also have a lot of mines and various carpentry, metallurgy, and clay-working activities. Furthermore, their Maritime Occult Athenaeum is known and appreciated in many regions as one of the few organized centers where the meta-magical art of Esoterics and Arteficers can be learned.
They speak the Commal language, common to all Anthro mammal races, and the most commonly spoken language on the planet.
Religiously they are mostly devoted to Azlean (deity of gardens and medicine), Teeje (deity of navigation and looting), and Sia Mori (deity of arts and dreams), but here and there also thrive the cult of Rowana (deity of love and family), Madra (deity of discord and corruption), Ekoari (deity of commerce and science), and Vael Nhor (deity of knowledge and memories).
Their Ancestral Princes were Adelferio and Mavia, who taught their race that while they are small and playful, they are still a predator race capable of fighting and killing just like others. What truly makes their strength is numbers and union, and therefore betrayal and turnaround are extremely dishonorable. But their life must be anything but focused on war. In fact, the most important thing is always to enjoy life, play, and maintain personal happiness.
